Katherine Grainger to join Civitas Public Affairs Group as Principal
Firm to launch New York City office
NEW YORK – Civitas Public Affairs Group today announced that Assistant Counsel to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, Katherine Grainger, is joining the firm as a principal and director of the firm’s new office in New York. Grainger will launch the New York City office of Civitas, a national public affairs firm that specializes in public policy at all levels of government with proven and innovative strategies.
“Few people have Katherine’s experience, relationships, and reputation for making things happen and getting things done,” said Patrick Guerriero, a founding partner of Civitas Public Affairs Group. “She is someone trusted by her colleagues who has been at the center of some of the leading public policy debates in modern state history. Her wealth of knowledge will be immensely beneficial to our clients.”
“As a member of the Cuomo Administration, I had the privilege and opportunity to work on historic policy issues that will affect New Yorkers positively for generations to come,” said Grainger. “I am excited to apply my background and expertise in law, public policy, and government in leading the expansion of Civitas in New York. In a short amount of time, Civitas has produced remarkable results, due to its creative, cutting-edge, and innovative approach and I am thrilled to join the team and serve both existing and future Civitas clients.”
Prior to joining the Cuomo Administration, Katherine was the Deputy of Program and Counsel for the New York State Senate where she helped to develop and pass legislation taking a stand for women’s rights, advancing education policy, and ensuring labor protections for all New Yorkers. She is a prominent voice in the reproductive rights and justice movements, having previously served as Vice President for Public Policy and Political Initiatives at NARAL Pro-Choice NY, and as Director of State Policy at the national Center for Reproductive Rights. Katherine has worked extensively on civil rights and women’s policy issues in the United States and overseas.
Steven M. Cohen, former Secretary to Governor Andrew Cuomo, said, “Katherine is an outstanding attorney, a shrewd strategist, and a tremendously knowledgeable policy expert. She was a critical member of the team that worked so successfully in Albany on behalf of the Governor. I have no doubt that the skill that made Katherine so effective in Albany will be a welcome addition to Civitas and a tremendous benefit to her clients.”
“Civitas has strong roots in New York, and Katherine’s leadership will help take our presence there to the next level,” said Bill Smith, founding partner of Civitas. “She has the policy chops, strong relationships, and political expertise that we expect to deliver real results for our clients. We’re thrilled she’s joining our outstanding team.”
