Marc Solomon joins Civitas as Principal and National Director
Political strategist and key architect of the marriage equality movement will consult to national advocacy campaigns.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Civitas Public Affairs Group announced that Marc Solomon, one of the country’s premier political strategists, is joining the firm as principal and national director.
“Marc’s work as lead political strategist of the marriage equality movement has been nothing short of extraordinary,” said Civitas founding partners Patrick Guerriero and Bill Smith. “He was indispensable in helping build the single most successful social movement in recent history and driving it to completion. We are incredibly pleased to have Marc join us at Civitas so that he can bring those winning bipartisan campaign skills to other crucial causes.”
Most recently, Marc served as national campaign director for Freedom to Marry, the organization that led the fight nationwide. Marc managed a staff of 25 with expertise in communications, field organizing, digital media, messaging, lobbying, public engagement, and general campaign management. Marc is a regular national media spokesperson, appearing on Meet the Press’ Press Pass and quoted frequently in national publications including the New York Times, Washington Post, and Politico.
“Civitas fills such a unique need—providing advocacy organizations and philanthropists with strategic support to build and execute successful campaigns,” said Solomon. “That’s exactly what I want to be doing, and I am so thrilled to be joining my long-time partners in the work, Patrick Guerriero and Bill Smith, and the tremendous Civitas team to help secure wins on other critical campaigns to make our society better.”
Marc has an extensive background in advocacy, public policy, and media, having served as a policy adviser to U.S. Senator Danforth in Washington, D.C., a community development strategist in St. Louis, and a researcher for Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward. In May 2009, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick presented Marc with the Massachusetts Democratic Party’s prestigious Franklin Delano Roosevelt Award, given yearly to an individual who espouses FDR’s ideals “with respect to democracy, justice, individual freedoms, and citizenship.” In 1999, the Rockefeller Foundation named Marc one of America’s next generation leaders and invited him to participate in its prestigious two-year Next Generation Leadership fellowship program. Marc is a magna cum laude graduate of Yale University and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
Marc’s highly acclaimed 2014 book Winning Marriage: The Inside Story of How Same-Sex Couples Took on the Politicians and Pundits—and Won, described by U.S. News and World Report as “a playbook for progressive causes,” has served as the basis for speeches to numerous social movement leaders and funders including those working to address income inequality, climate change, gun violence prevention, reproductive rights, criminal justice reform, hunger alleviation, equality for women in the workplace, and more.
Civitas Public Affairs Group delivers winning advocacy and public affairs campaigns that touch on some of the most pressing political and public policy issues of our day. The firm has offices in Washington, New York, Chicago, and Boston.
