Marc Solomon named partner at Civitas Public Affairs Group
Nationally-recognized strategist and author of Winning Marriage
leads efforts to protect democracy, expand equity
NEW YORK, NY – Civitas Public Affairs Group announced today that Marc Solomon, a sought-after campaign strategist and advocacy leader, is being promoted to partner. Marc will join managing partner Katherine Grainger and founding partners Patrick Guerriero and Bill Smith in leading the firm.
Since joining Civitas six years ago, Marc has led and advised winning advocacy campaigns on some of the country’s most profound challenges, working with leading foundations, philanthropists, and organizations.
“I am deeply proud of the work we do at Civitas, tackling this county’s most crucial challenges and focusing relentlessly on securing wins to strengthen our country and make it more just,” said Marc Solomon. “The stakes for our country and the world are so high, and I am grateful to help lead Civitas in supporting bold and visionary clients, present and future, to bring about a better America.”
At Civitas, Marc has worked with clients to build advocacy campaigns and pass laws, to make voting more accessible, win criminal justice reforms, improve the quality of life for immigrants, and strengthen LGBTQ families.
“Marc is a gifted strategist and leader who knows what it takes to win,” said Civitas Managing Partner Katherine Grainger. “We are proud of his promotion to partner and are fortunate to have his leadership at Civitas advancing the work of our clients.”
Over the last several years, Marc has prioritized work to strengthen American democracy, protect the ability to vote, and support robust election administration.
“Marc Solomon is one of the most effective and relentless strategists and campaign leaders I’ve worked with,” added Democracy Alliance Chairman John Stocks. “When the full story of the 2020 elections is written, I have no doubt that Marc’s leadership – working with a small number of others – to ensure election administrators nationwide had the support needed to run safe, secure and accessible elections, will be known as a crucial difference-maker. As we continue the work to defend our democracy, I feel so fortunate to be fighting alongside Marc.”
Before joining Civitas, Marc was one of the key architects of the marriage equality movement, having led full-time on the cause from the first state, Massachusetts, through the final Supreme Court win that established marriage nationwide. As national campaign director for Freedom to Marry, Marc drove the marriage movement’s political strategy.
Marc’s book Winning Marriage: The Inside Story of How Same-Sex Couples Took on the Politicians and Public—and Won, is described by U.S. News and World Report as “a playbook for progressive causes,” and was named a Best Book of 2014 by Slate which called it “the definitive political history of marriage equality.”
A graduate of Yale University and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, Marc lives in New Jersey with his husband Daniel, their children Joshua and Susannah, and Labrador Retriever Salvy.
