Meet Carmen Berkley, our new colleague!

WASHINGTON, DC – Civitas Public Affairs Group announced today that Carmen Berkley, former Managing Director of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, is joining the firm’s Washington, DC office as a senior associate.

Civitas is delighted to add Carmen’s expertise in operations, movement building, and campaign development to our team. Carmen has focused her career on creating initiatives and programs that have improved the lives of millions of people, with an emphasis on advocating for communities of color and women. Most recently, Carmen served as Managing Director of Planned Parenthood Action Fund where she oversaw the day-to-day operations for the Organizing and Electoral Campaigns Department.

Prior to joining Planned Parenthood, Carmen served as the director of Civil, Human, and Women’s Rights at the AFL-CIO where she led an effort to develop a racial justice and criminal justice platform for the labor movement. She also spearheaded a large-scale program to build the electoral capacity of people of color and women. Over her 15-year career, Carmen has served as the executive director of the Generational Alliance, a digital strategist at AFSCME, the field director at Choice USA, a regional field director at the NAACP, and the president of the United States Student Association.

Named to Essence Magazine’s Woke 100 andWashington Life Magazine’s top 40 under 40, Carmen has been recognized again and again for her significant work. A communicator by trade, Carmen has been featured in and written for periodicals such as the Washington Post, Huffington Post, and Coveteur Magazine. She currently serves as a board member for Advocates for Youth and the Fair Elections Center, and she is a founding member of Black Youth Project 100. Carmen also lends her talent as an adjunct trainer for political campaign experts Re:Power and Midwest Academy.

Carmen is a co-host and producer for one of the nation’s longest running women’s radio show,Sophie’s Parlor, on WPFW 89.3 FM and she also co-hosts a new show on WOWD-LP called Melody Divas. In her spare time, Carmen spins on the 1s and 2s as a DJ in the DC/MD/VA area.

She lives in Maryland where she loves to attend live concerts with her husband who is a singer, songwriter, and producer.
