Meet Nathan Smith, our new colleague!
WASHINGTON, DC – Civitas Public Affairs Group announced today that Nathan Smith is joining the firm’s Washington, DC office as a senior associate.
Most recently, Nathan was director of public policy at GLSEN where he advocated for the passage of federal anti-bullying and nondiscrimination legislation, managed a coalition of 120+ national organizations, and developed strategies to build bipartisan support. GLSEN is a national organization with decades of experience working to create safe and affirming schools for LGBTQ youth.
“Nathan is a strategic thinker with a proven track record working at both the federal and state levels to advocate for the passage of impactful legislation. Nathan’s strong leadership experience will be a valuable addition to our team and our important client work,” said Bill Smith and Patrick Guerriero, the founding partners of Civitas.
“I had the privilege of working with Civitas on various projects as policy director at GLSEN, and I was impressed time and time again by their level of preparation, their knowledge, and their strategic skill,” said Nathan. “Civitas takes on the issues that truly matter, and I’m thrilled to join this winning team playing a role in tackling some of the most pressing challenges of our time.”
Prior to his role as federal policy director, Nathan served as a public policy associate and public policy manager at GLSEN. He began his career as a fellow for Congressman Heath Shuler (D-NC) and then worked as legislative staff for Congresswoman Anna G. Eshoo (D-CA), where he advised the Congresswoman on a diverse portfolio of issues.
A native North Carolinian, Nathan has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Appalachian State University and a master’s degree in government from Johns Hopkins University. Nathan and his husband Justin reside in Washington, D.C.
