Sasha Ahuja (she/her) is an organizer, advocate, and strategist from New York City who has run local and national electoral, issue, and candidate campaigns. Prior to joining Civitas, she served as Campaign Director for New Yorkers for Equal Rights, a Ballot Initiative Committee that won a historic campaign to pass Proposal 1, the nation’s strongest civil rights protections in a state constitution in the country.
Sasha got her start in the movement for social justice in 2005 at the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, where she cut her teeth on the frontline of organizing in the labor movement, building worker power in the wake of the realities facing working class New Yorkers in a post-9/11 New York City. Since then, she has built her career facilitating community-driven policy change in government, in the labor movement and at local and national progressive organizations. In recent years, Sasha served as National Director of Strategic Partnerships at Planned Parenthood Federation of America where she supported the movement’s response to the fall of Roe v. Wade, supporting states to respond to egregious bans on reproductive health care. Sasha has also served in leadership roles at organizations like the New York Working Families Party, Girls for Gender Equity, and in New York City government. Sasha was Chair of New York City's Equal Employment Practices Commission and ushered in the creation of New York City’s Commission on Gender Equity.
Sasha has served as a campaigner and strategic advisor to leaders across the movement for social and economic justice in key movement moments over the last decade. A social worker by training, Sasha has served as an Adjunct Instructor and mentor to students seeking careers in politics, organizing and social change at Columbia University, Hunter College at the City University of New York, and at Touro College. Sasha resides in Brooklyn, NY with her wife Crystal and their daughter, Cy.
