Marc is a nationally recognized political strategist and campaign leader with 25 years of experience in strategy, campaign management, policy development and execution, messaging and communications leadership, and field mobilization. Marc has a deep track record of assembling winning bipartisan campaigns to change narratives, pass legislation, win ballot measures and drive national momentum on the most challenging issues.

Marc was one of the key architects of the marriage equality movement, having led full-time on the cause from the first state, Massachusetts, through the final Supreme Court win that established marriage nationwide. As national campaign director for Freedom to Marry, Marc drove the marriage movement’s political strategy.

Marc’s book Winning Marriage: The Inside Story of How Same-Sex Couples Took on the Politicians and Public—and Won, is described by U.S. News and World Report as “a playbook for progressive causes,” and was named a Best Book of 2014 by Slate which called it “the definitive political history of marriage equality.”

Since joining Civitas, Marc has applied lessons from the marriage equality movement to help clients secure impactful criminal justice reforms, pass laws making voter registration and voting more accessible, advance pro-immigrant policies, and secure wins for LGBTQ families. In the 2020 election cycle, Marc was lead consultant on an effort to award $350M in philanthropic dollars to 2,500 local election departments to ensure they could run safe and accessible elections during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Marc is a sought-after speaker on lessons from the marriage equality movement and their applicability to other social justice issues.

Marc is a magna cum laude graduate of Yale University and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Marc and his husband reside in New Jersey with their son, daughter, and yellow lab.
